Patriots' Day 2025
Join us as we help celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Lexington Alarm. We will support the Massachusetts National Guard Veterans, Steven K. Eaton Unit #14 for the Monday, April 21 commemoration that begins at 10:00 am. The event will be held at the mustering point of those Minute Men of 1775, the intersection of Lincoln and Lexington Streets. The photo at left was taken at the dedication of the monument placed by the Waltham Historical Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Waltham's response to the calling out of Minute Men has long been a confusing array of theories from "they slept in", "they weren't notified" or "they were tories". Nothing could be further from the truth as records show that more than 120 men responded and marched to Lexington, albeit via a very long way about.
Leaving from the corner of Lincoln and Lexington Streets they nearly reached Concord before hearing the on-going fight along Battle Road. At the end of their service records show they received pay for traveling 28 miles total.
The list below left is a transcript of the document shown at right currently on display at the Massachusetts State Archives.
"Company in Waltham Called out by Colonel Thomas Gardner on Alarm in defense of the Liberties of America under the Command of Abraham Peirce, Capt., to Concord and Lexington fights and the number of miles traveled and boor our Expenses and these Lins may sartifle that my Company was Kept upon guard till Saturday the 4th day after the fight at Concord.”
